When I was in seventh grade, my family moved and everything changed for me. Without my friends, I became a loner. In High School, I accepted Jesus in my life, but I didn’t want to give up the stuff I thought was “fun”. I started hanging around with a different crowd, a rougher crowd. I was drinking to fit in. I began failing and never graduated. I started working after that, but the drinking didn’t stop.

By the mid-80’s, I got into cocaine. It became my addiction. In 1996, I fathered a little girl named Anjelica. I tried to get straight, knowing there was this little life now dependent on me. I stayed clean for about a year, but I was trying to fight this addiction on my own. I knew I would lose the battle.

My parents were going to take care of Anjelica for a weekend. I remember watching them pull away, knowing I was about to let myself go. That weekend I got wasted. When my parents returned, they saw I was on something and in no condition to watch a 2-year old. They said they would not release Anjelica to me and told me I couldn’t come home. My parents were always my last resort. That all changed, they said “no more”. The fun had definitely stopped.

I didn’t have anywhere to go. I had burned all my bridges. I took my mom’s suggestion: to go into the B.A.D.D. School. I was soon deep in the Word of God there, and I could finally see myself for who I truly was. And I didn’t like what I saw.

I cried out to God, asking Him to change my life and somehow restore my family to me. God answered and said, “You take care of me and mine, and I'll take care of you and yours (like my daughter).” It was a struggle, but I walked it out day by day. Through Dominic’s teaching, I learned the tools that helped change my bad habits into good habits. I graduated my first year on September 22, 1999. Jesus was finally real in my life and I wanted to continue working on my relationship with Him so I decided to stay on. I have now been here for four years, and serve as an Assistant Director of the B.A.D.D. Organization.

Two years ago, my daughter Angelica came to live with me. My parents had graciously and lovingly took care of her while I was here in the beginning. Being a father has been a real challenge, but I love God and my daughter with my whole heart. I am trying to be the person that God wants me to be, and that includes being a godly father to my little girl.
